HOW TO STOP A SHELL PITCH IN FIVE STEPS.

Shell is looking for a new media agency.

Here’s what to say if you’re asked to pitch them:

  • 1: Point out they're going backwards on clean energy.

Despite record profits, Shell is freezing investment levels on renewable technology. (1)

Their board just voted against making their company compliant with the Paris Climate Agreement.

  • 2: Ask why they lied about climate science.

Shell scientists wrote in 1989 that producing more oil and gas would mean

“more violent weather - more storms, more droughts, more deluges.”

Shell then spent millions on PR campaigns that denied climate change was real anyways.

  • 3: Read them their own internal documents.

A Shell presentation released as part of a congressional investigation stated:

“Shell has no immediate plans to move to a net-zero emissions portfolio over our investment horizon of 10-20 years.”

Their actual investments on clean energy is less than 2% of their capital expenditures.

  • 4: Talk about the risks to your team.

Your clients are your agency’s brand.

Shell’s history of climate lies, human rights abuses, and misleading ads could put your agency’s reputation at risk.

Shell agencies’ have already had internal communications released by government investigations.

  • 5: Share what you can.

By sharing non-confidential info about the pitch, you can empower other Clean Creatives across the industry to say no to Shell.
